The entrance to the Sacred Realm has been opened and the Master Sword pulled from its pedestal! Unfortunately there was a slight miscalculation in the prophecies and Link is 7 years too young to be a proper Hero. Link is held in stasis, giving Ganondorf plenty of time to turn Hyrule into a very different place. Seven years later, Link is awakened by Rauru and told he is responsible for finding the 5 Sages that may be able to lend their power in fight against the King of Evil. Sheik stops by and points Link towards Kakariko Village to find the hookshot so that he can gain access to the Forest Temple, the location of the first Sage, deep within the Lost Woods.
